Nude men, with a twist!
Why is there so little male nudity in the world? And why does it usually almost always look the same? The work he/his is a playful attempt to portray the more or less naked man and his best asset in a way that transcends one-dimensionality endowing him with an own aesthetic through the power of color, textures, and experimental settings. The focus here is on vulnerability, conformity and a view to gender roles in an era in which on the one hand the boundaries between the sexes seem to be blurring while on the other hand there is an excessive fixation on increasingly stereotypical attributes of masculinity. The backdrops for the staged portraits - whether selected by the photographer or created by her - are as diverse as the subjects themselves: The models represent a wide range of professions and age groups from top executives to farmers. For some men the right setting was sought, for some settings the right man was sought. Almost none of them had ever stood in front of a camera before.
The series was created between 2024 and 2025 as a final project at the Fotoakademie-Koeln and shortly after its completion was featured in a sponsored solo exhibition for emerging talents at the Fotomuseum aan het Vrijthof in Maastricht, Netherlands. The exhibition will be on view from June 1 to July 27, 2026.
